A plantation is a calendar you signed for thirty years. These guides lay out what each of the tall four needs through the year — and mark, honestly, which of those needs fly and which stay on the ground.

Crop 01 · ಅಡಿಕೆ

Arecanut.

The slender palm of the Malnad and coastal belts — Karnataka grows roughly two-fifths of the world's arecanut. It repays care generously and punishes neglect in one wet season. A well-run garden yields for 40+ years; a garden that misses two koleroga windows may not recover its canopy for five.

  • Water & drainage: arecanut hates wet feet as much as drought. Drainage channels before the monsoon matter as much as irrigation after it.
  • Nutrition: annual organic manure plus split NPK doses; foliar micronutrients where crown yellowing or poor nut set shows.
  • Shade & intercrops: banana for young gardens; pepper, cocoa and nutmeg as the classic climbing companions in mature ones.
  • Sanitation: fallen infected nuts carry next year's koleroga. Collect and destroy — no spray substitutes for hygiene.

Crop 02 · തെങ്ങ് · தென்னை

Coconut.

Kalpavriksha — the tree of every wish — and the crop whose sheer height defeated a century of spray technology. A bearing palm asks for little but consistency: water, a full nutrient basket, and a crown that someone actually inspects. Most "sudden" coconut problems were visible from the air a year earlier.

  • Nutrition first: the majority of poor-yielding gardens are hungry, not sick. Balanced NPK with magnesium and boron transforms button retention and nut size.
  • Basin care: husk burial and mulching in basins for moisture; green manure crops between rows.
  • Crown hygiene: clean leaf axils deprive rhinoceros beetle of a home — ground work no aircraft replaces.
  • Watch the buttons: shedding buttons are the palm's first complaint. Diagnose (boron? mite? water stress?) before treating.

Crop 03

Oil palm.

India's fastest-expanding plantation crop, anchored in the Godavari districts and pushing hard into Telangana under the national edible-oil mission. Oil palm is a factory that runs on water and nutrients: it will convert every kilogram of balanced fertiliser into bunch weight, and it will document every skipped month in the harvest two years later.

  • Never let it thirst: oil palm's yield is written by irrigation discipline; stress now is bunch failure later.
  • Boron is non-negotiable: hook leaf and crinkled fronds mean the cheapest fix on the farm is overdue.
  • Ablation & pruning: disciplined early ablation and frond management set up the bearing frame.
  • Scout for Ganoderma: in older blocks, early detection at the trunk base is the whole game.

Crop 04

Rubber.

The crop that built central Kerala and is quietly strengthening in coastal Karnataka and Kanyakumari. Rubber's economics live and die on two disciplines: tapping done right, and the annual pre-monsoon defence of the canopy. A tree that holds its leaves through the rains taps more days and yields more latex — the entire case for prophylaxis in one sentence.

  • Tapping discipline: correct depth, frequency and rest protect the panel for decades; greed dries it.
  • Rain guarding: guards extend tapping days through the monsoon — small cost, direct yield.
  • Refoliation watch: the tender flush of Jan–Mar is powdery mildew's feast; hold the schedule.
  • Follow the Board: Rubber Board advisories on leaf fall disease are current and regional — our programmes track them.
